Description
At Atomic Crayon, we do a lot of work for non-profit groups. Volunteer Victoria is one such organization. Supporting over 260 volunteer agencies, Volunteer Victoria is a major portal for volunteering in Victoria.
The site was designed to provide extensive information on volunteer services and agencies in the Greater Victoria area. This site also needed to serve as a focal point for access to a legacy volunteer database that had very little room for customization or enhancement. Careful consideration had to be applied to creating a site that was functional, yet basic enough to be updated in-house by less-computer literate staff. Our team provided extensive post-deployment training and support to facilitate an effective migration of administrative roles.
When we redesigned the website in 2003 we not only wanted to list the volunteer opportunities and agencies available in Greater Victoria, but we also wanted to promote the volunteers themselves: We think these individuals deserve recognition for the great work they are doing. We concentrated on how they feel about volunteering, what they get out of it, and why they choose to do it. This focus on the volunteers - and not just the volunteer opportunities - gives the site a more personal feel, and one that speaks more directly to other potential volunteers. With an easily searchable database and a warm design style, the site has received significantly higher traffic and feedback than originally expected.
