Description

The Times Colonist is the oldest daily newspaper in Western Canada. It was officially formed in 1980 from the merger of two existing newspapers, the Victoria Daily Times and the British Colonist, each of which was well over a century old. The Times-Colonist is Vancouver Island's top newspaper and has one of the highest readerships of any metro newspaper in the country.

In August 2005, the Times-Colonist approached us at Atomic seeking a design of a mini-site that would provide advertising information to potential media buyers. The site they required was five pages - the pages were to detail the paper's market, their readership, their community involvement, their advertising advantage and the specialised contents of the newspaper itself.

While small in scope, the project presented an interesting challenge: The mini-site had to have a unique personality to it, but it had to be designed to sit within CanWest Mediaworks' existing template. Effectively, we needed to take something old and sculpt it into something fresh and new. With that in mind, we employed the existing template colour to the mini-site, but we used a bright, new design that made the pages jump out at the viewer, and chose a font that gave the page a flavour all it's own.

The crisp design and spacious layout attract media buyers to the important information that the Times-Colonist would like them to read. Considering the on-going prosperity of the paper, we feel that this mini-site has been a success, as well.
