We were approached by Thrifty Foods in November 2007 to create a microsite for their holiday season promotion, Be Merry With Blueberry. Naturally, we were excited as the promotion combined two of our favourite things here at Atomic Crayon: charity, and presents!
For the Be Merry With Blueberry event, Thrifty Foods was selling thousands of cute stuffed snowman teddy bears with the proceeds going to the Queen Alexandra Foundation, the Delta Hospital Foundation, and SHARE. As part of the promotion, selected Blueberry teddy bears could win gift certificates for either Thrifty Foods or Toys R Us. What Thrifty's needed was a microsite that promoted the event and that also allowed people to see if their Blueberry was a winner.
For the design, a warm colour palate and gentle motif were selected in order to be in keeping with the friendly spirit the promotion was looking for. As well, for such a fun event, we wanted people to have fun on the website too, and so we added numerous games for people to play.
These games included a customized word search - using vocabulary relating to the Be Merry promotion - and drawings that could be coloured both online (using Flash) or via printable PDFs. We also created from scratch a site-wide Scavenger Hunt that allowed site visitors to find various holiday objects hidden throughout the site and drag them to a toy box, alerting the winners when they'd found them all. Lastly, we created an impressive database and devised bespoke functionality that allowed people who had purchased Blueberrys to find out instantly if they had won one of the terrific prizes.
This was one of the most fun and original sites we've created due to the variety of games and the array of functionality involved. That it was created to help some truly fantastic charities makes it even better.
